Only hours after the White House announced Kimberly Guilfoyle’s dismissal as U.S. ambassador to Greece, President Donald Trump went a step further, seemingly dismissing her past relationship with his son Donald Trump Jr.
“No, she wasn’t a member of my family. She, I guess, dated my son a long time ago,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday.
Trump’s less-than-warm remarks about his son's former fiancée came shortly after she had been dismissed as U.S. ambassador to Greece after a series of reports raised questions about her conduct on the job.
The White House said Guilfoyle had been asked to resign after nearly a week of speculation about the future of her position.
“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful
asset to the team, and we wish her well," White House press secretary Katie Zacharia said during her first briefing with the media.
Guilfoyle denies allegations
In a post on X after the White House’s announcement, Guilfoyle went on to announce her resignation and denounced the allegations against her as false.
"I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity," she said. "I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service."
The allegations against the former ambassador were reported by the Wall Street Journal. According to the paper, Trump campaign donor Eric Deters said Guilfoyle pushed him to pay off her $100,000 American Express bill while she was preparing for her Senate confirmation hearing last year.
Guilfoyle is also said to have offered to make a businessman "a lot of f---ing money" during a conversation, in which she touted her connections to the Trump family earlier this year.
