Two young children were fatally shot in California by a man authorities believe to be their father, who was also hospitalized with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
The Los Angeles Police Department told USA TODAY officers responded to a report of a shooting at an intersection in the city's western Pico Union neighborhood around 12:50 p.m. PT on Oct. 11.
Responding officers located a 4-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl who had been shot at the scene. The children were taken to an area hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The suspected shooter was also at the scene and appeared to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. He was additionally taken to a hospital and is in custody, but officials did not immediately
confirm his condition.
Police said the man is in his 30s or 40s but did not release other identifying information. The Los Angeles Times and ABC 7 TV reported the man is the children's father.
USA TODAY has reached out to Los Angeles police for additional information about whether the man will be criminally charged in the shooting.
Officials are still investigating a motive in the deadly incident. Anyone with information is asked to call LAPD at 1-877-LAPD 24-7.
USA TODAY has reached out to the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner's Office for further information.
