After missing Tennessee football’s season-opening 56-9 romp over Furman, Arion Carter is set to make a notable impact when he takes the field for the first time during the 2026 season — while reminding people why he was forced to sit out last week.
Starting with the Vols’ game against Georgia Tech on Saturday, Sept. 12, Carter will be making donations to cancer research for defensive stats he accumulates this season — $427 for every tackle, $500 for every sack, $1,000 for every interception or forced fumble and $5,000 for every defensive touchdown he scores.
If the figure for tackles seems oddly specific, there’s a good reason for it.
In July, the
senior linebacker was suspended by the NCAA for two games because he returned to college after his agent had paid for a $427 flight to an NFL training facility during the pre-draft process. He repaid his agent and eventually withdrew from the NFL draft. The NCAA later reduced his suspension to one game after Tennessee appealed — and after receiving significant public backlash — allowing him to return for the Week 2 game at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta.
"You can’t really change the circumstances you’re put in," Carter told reporters on Monday, Sept. 7. "So I tried to turn a negative into a positive and put a smile on people’s faces."
Carter’s initiative this season has a personal purpose, too. His girlfriend — Mariah Bryant, an ICU nurse in Nashville — was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in February. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments. Carter’s donations will go to Nashville-area charities such as Sisters Network Nashville, an organization that pays medical bills for cancer patients.
Last season, Carter finished tied for third among Vols players in total tackles, with 76. He added 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble, meaning if he replicates his 2026 production, he’ll donate just shy of $35,000.
Even though he didn’t play in Tennessee’s win against Furman, Carter was elected as the team’s sole captain for the game, walking out alone to midfield for the pre-game coin toss.
"(Carter) is the strongest leader in our locker room," Vols coach Josh Heupel told reporters. "He represents Tennessee in exactly the way that I and our administration and our staff would want somebody to represent Tennessee. It was a no-brainer on Saturday that he would be the guy out there."
Carter won’t be the only one giving money to cancer research this season. On Tuesday, right-wing media personality and Tennessee fan Clay Travis said he would be matching Carter’s $427 donation for every tackle this season.
