Roger Goodell has agreed to a four-year contract extension that will keep him as NFL commissioner through the 2030 season, with his new deal set to expire on March 31, 2031.
NFL teams were notified of the agreement Sunday.
The extension provides long-term stability at the top of the league as Goodell enters the next phase of his tenure. He has served as commissioner since 2006, overseeing a period of significant growth for the NFL, including expanded media rights, international games, increased league revenue and major changes to the regular-season and postseason formats.
Goodell’s new contract will carry him through a period that includes the continued expansion of the NFL’s international games and the league’s current media agreements, which
run through the 2033 season.
The timing of the extension also aligns Goodell’s tenure with the league’s current collective bargaining agreement, which expires at the end of the 2030 season in March 2031.
Details of Goodell's contract weren't revealed, but the 67-year-old commissioner's agreement is "performance-based" pay.
By 2031, Goodell would be in his 26th year as commissioner, the second-longest tenure in NFL history behind Pete Rozelle (1960-89). Goodell will also be 72 by the end of his extension, older than Rozelle when he retired at 63 and previous commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who retired at age 65.
The agreement ensures that Goodell will remain in place as the NFL navigates the next round of labor negotiations and other major decisions facing the league.
