Now is not the time to invalidate A'ja Wilson's feelings. The Las Vegas Aces star has played in over 360 career WNBA games including the playoffs. She's well aware of typical fan behavior. There was something unique enough about her altercation with an Indiana Fever fan during Tuesday night's game to set her off in a way we've never seen.
Now is the time to listen and understand; for fans attending games to hopefully learn. There's an inherent animosity visiting teams expect from a home crowd, especially in a playoff environment. But there's a thin line between that animosity being perceived as an actual threat.
☀️ The Morning Win
The elephant in the room here is an Indiana fanbase that's been criticized several times for taking things too far. Even as recently
as last month when these exact two teams played in the regular season and Jackie Young got into it with a fan.
Wilson's encounter Tuesday night was with a fan who wanted badly to be seen. He needed his presence to be felt so much he stepped away from his seat to enter her path of vision. In hindsight we can say she overreacted, but in that split second of looking up, Wilson perceived his forward movement as a threat. Given the context, it's hard to blame her.
"I don't really get into the bull[expletive]. I don't," Wilson said after the game. "I try to play my game, keep it pushing. But if I'm just walking, because I just got the foul, I'm chilling. And if I see a man come at me, taking steps towards me and pointing at me. I don't give a damn what you said. I don't give a damn how you said it, your tone. That is unacceptable. You don't step towards me."
The line of what's acceptable behavior is different for everybody, and Wilson learned her line Tuesday. It's for her to decide whether it needs to adjust. But if she does handle things differently in the future, it won't be because she was wrong in what she was feeling. It'll be because she gave the fan exactly what he was looking for. Attention. The feeling of being in her head. Acknowledgement that he has an impact on the game.
And he'd be right. Even if those things were true for only a split second. He provoked Wilson to leave the floor, resulting in a technical foul and free throw for the Fever in a critical Game 2. He did impact the game, and all it took was a couple steps and finger point. As much as anything, that's something a four-time MVP and three-time champion shouldn't allow.
The Lynx were eliminated early... again
While the Fever were able to stave off elimination and force a winner-take-all Game 3 against the Aces, the Minnesota Lynx weren't so lucky. They were bounced by the New York Liberty, who became the first 8-seed to knock off a No. 1 in the first round of the WNBA playoffs.

Of course, the Liberty aren't your typical 8-seed. They're only two years removed from winning a championship, with much of the same core in tact. But that won't make the loss any easier for the Lynx, who have fallen short of a championship three straight years as a top-two seed.
