Turns out that the NFL's model of consistent excellence at receiver didn't lose his mojo merely by being injured.
It was certainly fair to ponder the ways in which the San Francisco 49ers' signing of Mike Evans might not work out. The league's most snake-bitten franchise, after all, was counting on the 33-year-old marquee offseason signing to stay healthy as he came off a hamstring injury and broken collarbone in 2025.
Then, the 49ers' passing attack lost Ricky Pearsall to a season-ending knee injury in August. The heightened reliance on Evans looked like a shakier proposition through training camp, when the 13th-year veteran was plagued by groin and quad injuries.
For a team that seems to have an injury track record determined by Murphy's Law,
that dynamic was enough to leave many unnerved.
But Evans made it to Australia for the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams without limitations. And he showed he was fully unencumbered during his debut with his new team.
Even though he wasn't operating in a starring role, Evans proved to be nothing short of essential for the 49ers' offense in a 27-7 win. He caught six passes for 49 yards and one touchdown, with his third-quarter scoring snag helping San Francisco take command of a game that previously seemed as though it could go either way.
So the 6-5, 231-pound WR didn't lose his considerable size advantage overnight. And he didn't leave his acumen as a six-time Pro Bowler back in Tampa, either.
Though Evans' arrival stoked visions of Kyle Shanahan getting back to his play-calling roots of funneling passes to a supersized target, the 49ers coach opened the game with a unique wrinkle. Evans lined up primarily in the slot in the early going, affording him not only more favorable releases but also a more favorable matchup than the one he would have faced on the outside against Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. He leveraged that advantage on the opening drive into three catches – all coming on third down and extending the series – for 22 yards.
His signature moment, however, came on a third-and-goal early in the third quarter. Lined up wide against Watson, Evans engaged the corner and prepared for the fade. A Brock Purdy pass that could generously be described as a 50-50 ball rapidly saw its odds elevate in the receiver's favor as it drew closer to Evans' hands.

Drawing definitive conclusions from Week 1 action is a dangerous endeavor and one that usually leads to later embarrassment. Still, after Thursday, it seems clear that, barring injury, Evans might be one of the most consequential – and underrated – moves of the offseason.
No, even with his score, Evans didn't break the game open. He wasn't the focal point of the offense, and the Rams' defense had more problems than merely guarding him.
Still, when Evans isn't hampered by an ailment, his game looks to be aging well.
With San Francisco having to contend with the likes of the Rams and Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West, offensive patience is a must. Facing each of those formidable defenses very likely will necessitate a shift toward the quick game, as was the case Thursday. As someone who can box out any defender thrown his way and haul down contested catches, Evans demonstrated he's invaluable for an attack that merely needs to keep things moving.
His presence and reliability also can afford the run game additional opportunities to find its footing. Against the 49ers, the ground game got going in the second half, with McCaffrey and rookie Kaelon Black combining for 133 yards on 24 carries for the day.
Maybe that doesn't seem like a particular problem for Shanahan, whose offense ranked first in third-down conversion rate in 2025 while finishing tied for fourth in red-zone scoring rate. But in a contest in which the 49ers lost promising rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling to an ankle injury, nothing can be taken as a given.
Of course, the complexion of the offense is sure to change. The explosive plays that Shanahan always seems to generate will return – perhaps as early as next week against the Miami Dolphins' undermanned secondary.
Maybe Evans will be part of a rediscovered vertical game. Or maybe he'll remain more boxed in to a role that suits his strengths in advanced age.
Either way, Evans is already giving the 49ers exactly what they need – and more.
