Fantasy doesn't always meet reality.
In the real world, defense wins championships. In the fantasy football world, defenses are a thorn in your side and that's putting it nicely. While quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends provide you with points, it's the defenses that simply take.
Most weeks, your D/ST spot will start with more points than it will finish with.
Your success with D/STs will almost certainly come down to strategy and a little luck.
There are set-it-and-forget-it options and then there are streamers, without the price hikes. The latter will require a little more work and waiver-wire strategy to navigate all year long. In the grand scheme of things, that is likely better than over-drafting a top unit and living
with the results.
One way or another, embrace the D/ST part of your league. Embrace the chaos. Embrace the agonizing nature of how points are scored – or subtracted. Embrace that late interception that swings a matchup or the devastating touchdown surrendered that destroyed your week.
After all, that randomness is the beauty of the position. Here's a look at the D/ST rankings as the 2026 NFL regular season inches closer.
Fantasy football rankings: D/ST
1. Houston Texans. Houston added depth this offseason to what was already considered arguably the best defense in the league. This unit is the crown jewel in fantasy, especially as the Texans enter the season without any key departures. A dominant playoff performance and a newly extended Will Anderson Jr. are just the icing on the cake.
2. Denver Broncos. How's the air up there? A classic height joke is no joke for the visiting teams in Denver. The Mile High City offers an altitude advantage for half the season, and it's also home to a talented defense. It's a mix you can't ignore. The Broncos remain an elite fantasy defense.
3. Los Angeles Rams. The Rams traded for Myles Garrett and got Aaron Donald to come out of retirement. As if a scary pass rush wasn't enough, they also traded for Trent McDuffie and signed Jaylen Watson to fix the defense's only weakness. It's a complete unit that could be in the conversation for No. 1. A lack of continuity and a challenging schedule down the stretch cap the unit at No. 3 for now.
4. Seattle Seahawks. Losing Bud Clark hurts, but this is still a Seahawks team that is largely running it back after suffocating opponents en route to winning Super Bowl 60. There's no reason to believe this team is slowing down, especially with many key pieces returning.
5. Philadelphia Eagles. Jonathan Greenard should be a difference maker for Philly whenever he gets on the field. The pass-rusher is dealing with an injury, but that doesn't mean this defense doesn't sport plenty of talent elsewhere. A young unit across the board, Vic Fangio has plenty of options to deploy on game days. Plus, they figure to have some favorable matchups down the stretch.
6. New England Patriots. The Patriots are another team that rode their defense to the Super Bowl. However, some of New England's success can be attributed to an easy regular season schedule. Still, we aren't discounting the unit with Mike Vrabel overseeing the operation.
7. Los Angeles Chargers. Provided the Chargers can avoid injuries, they should be in good shape. Much of that is thanks to an offense that has been given a new lease on life with Mike McDaniel taking over as offensive coordinator. If Justin Herbert lives up to the hype and L.A. can put points on the board, the turnovers should follow for the Bolts' defense.
8. Minnesota Vikings. Physical and aggressive, no one wants to get in the way of a Brian Flores-coached defense. Known for a high pressure rate, the Vikings added plenty of reinforcements in the draft and moved on from some veterans. An injection of youth could be enough to keep the unit near the top of the fantasy rankings.
9. Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars forced turnovers like they were going out of style last season, posting the second-most takeaways in the league with 31. That won't be easy to replicate, especially without Devin Lloyd – who had five interceptions alone. Of course, this team is similar to the Chargers in that you're hoping the offense gives the defense some fantasy-friendly game scripts.
10. Baltimore Ravens. It might not have been a flashy offseason in Baltimore, but flashy doesn't win games. The Ravens quietly filled some needs and could get Nnamdi Madubuike back early in the season. Factor in the addition of Trey Hendrickson for the pass rush and it's hard to discount the Ravens' personnel. Even better, the new head coach Jesse Minter pulling the strings makes this an exciting defense to back.
11. Detroit Lions. Health will determine how high this Lions defense can rise in the ranks. However, Detroit's aggressive offensive style can sometimes saddle this group with unfavorable field position. The Lions are also down both starting safeties to begin the season, which won't do wonders for the health concerns.
12. Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers remain a model of consistency. Whether the franchise can continue that in the Mike McCarthy era remains to be seen, but the defense has been steady for years so we aren’t hopping off the bandwagon yet. There must be something in that Pittsburgh water.
13. Buffalo Bills. Jim Leonard comes over from Denver to be the new defensive coordinator, coaching a unit that isn't necessarily loaded with household names. Fortunately for Buffalo, the players don't have to sell jerseys to make a good unit. Josh Allen and the offense should provide plenty of favorable game scripts.
14. Cleveland Browns. Speaking of favorable game scripts, that won't be a thing in Cleveland this year. Jim Schwartz is gone. Myles Garrett is gone. However, let's not forget that Jared Verse is no slouch and the Browns did manage to add to the defense in other ways. In a division known for low-scoring and physical defensive battles, we aren't willing to quit on Cleveland yet.
15. San Francisco 49ers. Can they stay healthy? That seems to be the biggest thing in San Francisco. Fred Warner, Nick Bosa and others will be back. Now that's an infusion of talent to get excited about.
16. Kansas City Chiefs. Steve Spagnuolo's defense plugged some holes in free agency and the draft, which should help the Chiefs have renewed energy this season. They traded away Trent McDuffie, who won't be easy to replace, but the hope is that Mansoor Delane can fill that void. When it's all said and done though, it might be R Mason Thomas who makes the biggest impact out of the draft class.
