A Pittsburgh pet company is combining children's education, pet ownership and community giving through a new startup designed to strengthen the bond between kids and their dogs.
Pup O'Clock, founded by Brian Manni, offers monthly themed subscription boxes that help children learn responsibility through hands-on activities centered around caring for their pets. The company was inspired by a trend Manni noticed after the COVID-19 pandemic, when many families adopted dogs but often struggled with the responsibilities that came with pet ownership.
"I wanted to give kids a tool to adopt responsibility at that particular age," Manni said. "And again, what better way than through dog ownership? It helps them build consistency, discipline, self-sacrifice
and patience, all the things where you'll find meaning in life long term."
Manni said the company's mission was also shaped by his own recovery journey. Giving back to programs like Autism Pittsburgh andJoey's PAW was also woven into the business model. A portion of proceeds also supports animal shelters and organizations focused on the human-animal bond.
"I started this company and it paralleled my sobriety journey to be honest with you," he said. "We wanted this to be a total community approach too. We're giving back not only to shelters but also special needs organizations. We work locally with Autism Pittsburgh, and just seeing how animals and kids can make each other better over time, why not do it through entertainment?"
Each Pup O'Clock box contains educational content, activities, recipes, dog enrichment tools, treats and collectible materials tied to a monthly theme. Lessons are developed with veterinary and pet enrichment professionals and are designed to help children better understand their pets' needs while building practical life skills.
The startup has also partnered with Point Park University, providing opportunities for students and recent graduates to contribute in animation, technology, web development and creative arts as the company expands its upcoming "League of Pups" animated series.
Pup O'Clock's 2.0 Kickstarter campaign officially launched Oct. 15 and will run through Nov. 15. The company hopes the campaign will help expand its subscription program, create more opportunities for local students and continue supporting community organizations throughout the Pittsburgh region.
