With the first full week of October nearly complete, the end of the men's college soccer regular season is approaching.
With that comes the push for a spot in the NCAA tournament and, once there, a possible run to the College Cup.
As jockeying for the sport's ultimate prize continues, No. 1 SMU lived up to its spot at the top of the United Soccer Coaches poll, securing a 2-0 road win over Wake Forest in its lone game last week. The victory kept the Mustangs' unbeaten record intact, improving them to 9-0-1.
In arguably the biggest game of the week, No. 2 Indiana also remained undefeated with a 3-1 home victory against No. 7 Maryland. In the win, the Hoosiers
scored two goals in 196 seconds to help them get out to a 3-0 lead before the Terrapins added a late goal.
No. 3 Georgetown rolled past Providence, 6-1, its fifth-consecutive win over a stretch in which it has outscored opponents by a 20-5 margin. The Hoyas' Big East counterpart, No. 6 Creighton, beat Omaha and tied St. John's to improve to 10-0-3. Elsewhere in the heartland, No. 4 UMKC extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with a 1-0 win at St. Thomas.
Beyond Maryland, not all top-10 teams went unscathed. No. 8 Michigan State was dropped on the road against UCLA, 3-0, and all the way to 19 in the latest coaches poll.
Here's a look at how those results impacted the latest United Soccer Coaches poll:
