Not good enough.
That was the message from Travis Kelce after the Kansas City Chiefs lost a second consecutive game. Unlike the blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks on "Sunday Night Football" in Week 7, the Chiefs were positioned to win against the Denver Broncos in Week 8.
Until they weren't.
A missed field goal from Harrison Butker and a failure to score at the goal line in the final seconds allowed Denver to escape with a win following another fourth quarter comeback. Kelce shared his thoughts on the missed opportunity after the game.
"In our hearts we feel like we should've came out with a victory, but at the same time, that's not the reality of things," Kelce said, via The Athletic. "Reality of things is we gotta fix a lot. The little things, mistakes.
And it's starts with the person that you're looking in the mirror."
Kelce didn't exclude himself from criticism following the disappointing result, noting that he has been frustrated with the results in the last three games since the bye week.
"I'm one of them," Kelce said. "I've been frustrated with myself on how long I've been in the league and the procedural stuff that happened for the last three games really."
Despite blowing the fourth quarter lead, the Chiefs still had a chance to win in the final seconds. Kansas City benefited from a big kickoff return after Denver took the lead, setting it up for a potential game-winning drive. Within just a few plays, the Chiefs were at the goal line threatening for the go-ahead score.
On fourth down at the one-yard line, Jaylon Moore was flagged for a false start that backed the Chiefs up. It was the 11th penalty of the game for the visitors, costing the team 105 yards.
Patrick Mahomes was sacked on the next play to end the game after the Broncos' pass rush got to him.
The loss dropped the Chiefs to 5-2 and out of first place in the AFC West as the Broncos improved to 6-2. There is still a long way to go in the season, but Kelce acknowledged that he has to step up.
"I gotta be better for my teammates and that sets the tone for a lot of people in this room," Kelce said. "Everybody's just gotta up the ante. We showed some fight, a lot of fight and I can take that out of this."
The Chiefs will try to get back on track against the New York Jets in Week 9.
