The music world still isn’t over the loss of Dolly Parton – or showing their love for her.
The MTV Video Music Awards continued the worldwide Parton praise almost exactly a month after the singer, actress and philanthropist died with a tribute performance during the Sept. 27 show that started with a old recording of Parton sending fans a message of hope and resilience.
Kacey Musgraves, who is nominated for best country for “Dry Spell,” returned to the VMAs stage for the first time in five years to honor Parton.
Wearing a glittering pink gown Parton would have approved of, Musgraves performed Parton's 1974 "I Will Always Love You." Her soft and lilting rendition was more Parton than Whitney Houston, whose 1992-version reaches heights only her voice
could find.
This isn’t the first time Musgraves tipped her hat to the country icon.
At the 2016 CMA Awards, Musgraves sangParton’s glistening “Here You Come Again” as Parton received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. Three years later, Parton joined Musgraves and Katy Perry to perform the same songat the Grammy Awards as part of a tribute celebrating Parton, the 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year.
Parton was also recently remembered at the Emmy Awards by her longtime friend and fellow country superstar, Reba McEntire, with a touching performance of Parton's 1983 song, "Appalachian Memories."
U2 also just announced that Parton's final vocal recording, a duet on the song "Torn," will be on the band's Nov. 13 album, "Carnaval De Luz."
