Mariska Hargitay has solved hundreds of cases as Olivia Benson on “Law & Order: SVU,” but on Emmy night last month, she faced one of her most high-profile mysteries yet: Would Taylor Swift be in attendance?
Even though the “Patient Zero” singer's "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour | The Final Show" documentary series was nominated for five awards (all of which were presented a week earlier at the Creative Arts Emmys, where the special went home empty-handed) the broadcast conflicted with the Kansas City Chiefs' home opener game, which Swift attended alongside husband Travis Kelce’s family and Tom Cruise.
But fans were treated to the next best thing – Swift participated in a pre-recorded "SVU" skit in support of her longtime friend, and 2026 Emmy host,
Hargitay, a major secret that the cast and crew kept for weeks.

In a new interview with USA TODAY, Kelli Giddish, who plays fan favorite Sergeant Amanda Rollins on “SVU,” pulls back the curtain on how it all went down.
“Mariska was like, 'I have Taylor Swift coming, we’re going to do a skit,'" Giddish, 46, recalls, whispering to relay the hush-hush nature of it all. “It was super-secret from moment one. We went covertly and filmed on a Sunday. [Taylor] was like, 'I’m so happy to be here.' She’s such a huge fan of the show, she’s a huge fan of Mariska’s."

Of course, Swift has the ultimate fandom cred in the form of herbeloved cat, Olivia Benson. The feline Olivia Benson also appeared in the skit, which playfully cracked the case about Swift’s potential appearance at the Emmys using Easter eggs, Swift song references, and ultimately Swift herself to get to the bottom of things.
“She was so prepared and so willing and so happy that we were all there and we just got to play,” Giddish adds.
Swift, 36, was such a gracious visitor that she even brought homemade sourdough brown butter chocolate chip cookies for everyone on set. “They were delicious. And I’m a cookie snob," says Giddish.

After the big reveal at the Emmys, Giddish's phone started blowing up. “I did get a lot of calls from people back home in Georgia, people that I grew up with that now have daughters. They were like, ‘What was she like?’”
But in terms of keeping the big surprise on the downlow until the broadcast, Giddish says it was a piece of cake, noting, “I’m really good at keeping secrets.”
