It may not be a reboot, but the cast of "Home Improvement" is getting the gang back together.
Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who starred as one of Tim Allen's sons on the classic '90s sitcom, reunited with some of his costars in a rare new photo, shared by Thomas' TV mom Patricia Richardson on Instagram Wednesday, July 29.
The nostalgic snap showed Thomas, 44, posing alongside Richardson and Taran Noah Smith, who played his little brother on the Emmy-winning comedy. Thomas wore a dark top with a pair of black-rimmed glasses as he smiled for the group photo.
"My other boys❤️" Richardson, 75, captioned the post.
Thomas, who began acting professionally at 9 years old, played mischievous middle child Randy Taylor on "Home Improvement," a show that centered
on TV host Tim Taylor and the antics of his suburban family. He appeared in over 170 episodes but departed the series in 1998 to focus on his schooling. Thomas briefly reprised his role for a trio of episodes in the show's eighth and final season.
The former child star enrolled at Harvard University in 2000, majoring in philosophy and history; he spent his third year abroad at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. He also attended Columbia University, graduating from the Ivy League college's School of General Studies in 2010.
Following his breakout role on "Home Improvement," Thomas stepped back from the entertainment industry in the 2000s. The actor made guest appearances on the TV series "Smallville," "8 Simple Rules" and "Veronica Mars," along with a handful of voiceover roles.
Thomas briefly returned to spotlight in the early 2010s, reuniting with Allen for a string of appearances on his family sitcom "Last Man Standing."
Despite Thomas' get-together with castmates Richardson and Smith, a full-on TV reunion is likely not in the cards.
During a March 2024 appearance on the "Back to the Best" podcast, Richardson debunked recent speculation that a "Home Improvement" reboot was in the works.
"I would hear [Tim Allen] was coming out publicly and saying this stuff about how everyone was on board to do a 'Home Improvement' reunion. But he never asked me, and he never asked Jonathan, who I talk to," Richardson said at the time. In 2023, Allen reportedly revealed in an interview with The Messenger that he'd been brainstorming a spinoff with costar Richard Karn, as well as his TV sons Thomas, Smith and Zachery Ty Bryan.
"So, I called Jonathan one day and said, 'Has he asked you about this?' And he went, 'No, and why's he going around telling everybody that we're all on board when he hasn't talked to you or me?'" Richardson continued.
She went on to cite several factors for why a reboot wouldn't work, including the legal troubles of costar Bryan. The actor, who played eldest son Brad Taylor, was sentenced to 14 months in jail in February after racking up several DUI charges in recent years.
"I mean, Zach is now a felon. Taran hasn't acted since he left the show; he's not an actor anymore. And Jonathan's not really interested in acting. He wants to direct and write," Richardson said. "And we don't have Wilson [played by the late Earl Hindman]."
She added: "It's not going to be the show, at all. And people think we can just magically go right back to who we were 30 years ago and do a show that was 30 years ago, and we've all changed quite a bit, I think, since then. It would be very weird."
