Sean and Catherine Lowe are opening up about an "incredibly difficult" new chapter for their family.
The couple, who met when Sean, 42, starred on "The Bachelor" Season 17 in 2013, revealed on social media that their 8-year-old son Isaiah has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
In a July 21 Instagram post, Catherine wrote that Isaiah was diagnosed after his pediatrician noticed symptoms – like weight loss and frequent urination – that "stuck out to her."
"Otherwise healthy and active, she ran some tests and sent us to the emergency room based on those alarming results," Catherine, 40, wrote.
In another update on July 23, Sean Lowe said the 8-year-old spent four days in the hospital for treatment.
"The next thing he knows, he's getting blood tests
and shots every two hours, which of course he hates as an 8-year-old," Sean said in an Instagram video. "And as a parent, it was incredibly difficult to watch him basically scream for help."
The couple, who married in a televised ceremony in 2014, are also parents to son Samuel, 10, and daughter Mia, 6.

Catherine Lowe asked fans for prayers as the family navigates a "new normal."
"This tough boy has endured countless injections, four days away from his home and a lifestyle and routine that feels very very foreign," she wrote. "He’s done all this without losing his playful spirit and a joy that doesn’t make sense. A lot of tears, pain and confusion too, but he has been a trooper, no question about it."
Sean Lowe also praised his son's team of medical professionals and thanked followers for the outpouring of support.
"We've been flooded with messages from people who are either Type one diabetic or have children that are," he said. "All kinds of nice, just encouraging words and things like that."
He continued: "What we keep being told over and over again is it will become normal. It's the new normal. And he's doing great."
It's not Isaiah's first health challenge. As a 5-month-old, he was hospitalized in an intensive care unit with bronchiolitis in 2018.
What is Type 1 diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition that can lead to excess sugar in the blood, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Type 1 diabetes – which is what Isaiah Lowe was diagnosed with – often starts during childhood or someone's teen years, though it can start at any age, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Another kind, Type 2, is the more prevalent of the two and is more common in people older than 40.
