Following a third measles exposure in Pittsburgh, cases in the region grew by one just two days into September.
Allegheny County had yet to count any measles cases among residents in 2026. But on Sept. 2, the state's dashboard that tracks the disease showed a new case in Armstrong County northeast of Pittsburgh, the first the county has seen this year.
Overall, cases statewide surged over 500, with 119 new cases added in the last week.
Here's what to know.
How many cases of measles have been reported in Pittsburgh region?
There have been no reported cases of measles in Allegheny County as of Sept. 2, though residents from other counties who were diagnosed with measles visited UPMC Children's Hospital on Aug. 12, 18 and 27, according to the county health department.
Throughout the region, several cases of the disease
have been reported. Here's where they are:
- Allegheny: 0
- Armstrong: 1
- Beaver: 0
- Butler: 1 (diagnosed on Aug. 25 according to hospital spokesperson; not reported by state dashboard as of Sept. 2)
- Fayette: 0
- Lawrence: 0
- Washington: 0
- Westmoreland: 1
How many measles cases are there in Pennsylvania?
Throughout Pennsylvania, there were 540 reported cases of measles as of Sept. 2. Many cases continued to be concentrated in Lancaster County, which reported 242 cases.
None of Pennsylvania's cases were among people who were fully vaccinated. So far in 2026, 91 people with measles were hospitalized, and there were two measles-associated deaths in the state. Thirty percent of cases involved children under the age of 18.
Who was exposed to measles in Pittsburgh?
Cases of measles in Pittsburgh involved three individuals from other counties, according to Allegheny County Health Department. One visited UPMC Children's Hospital's Emergency Department on Aug. 12 and Aug. 18. Most recently, on Aug. 27, two residents with measles from another county visited the hospital and potentially exposed hospital visitors and staff. The county health department warned that people at these locations during these times may have been exposed:
- Giraffe/Hippo Waiting Room on the 3rd floor from 1 to 4 p.m.
- Giraffe Clinic on the 3rd floor from 2 to 5 p.m.
- Cafeteria on the 3rd floor from 3 to 5 p.m.
- Main Lobby on the 1st floor from 1 to 5 p.m.
- Grape/Purple Elevators from 1 to 5 p.m.
