Sweeping changes are upcoming at Dulles International Airport as President Donald Trump has announced a $22.5 billion redesign of the Washington DC-area airport.
The makeover, the latest in a series of
renovations Trump has pushed during his second term, is expected to transform the passenger experience at the airport.
More than 5 million square feet will be added or renovated in the project, which will include new and modernized concourses, an expanded main terminal with improved access to gates, upgraded boarding areas and ticketing facilities, a larger U.S. Customs facility and an expanded AeroTrain system to replace Dulles' mobile lounge vehicles, often called "people movers."
Additionally, a new parking garage will be built that will feature 32,000 spots, officials said Wednesday.
Trump called the project "efficient and really beautiful," adding that it is necessary because Dulles is "a terrible place to be."
But when will construction begin - and how long will it take? Here's what we know.
When will construction begin at Dulles aiport?
Construction at Dulles will begin in the spring of 2027, according to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
"The transformation will occur in phases over several years, with the Airports Authority, United Airlines and other airlines and airport partners working together to move construction forward while Dulles continues to operate safely and reliably for travelers," the Department of Transportation said.
When Airport Architecture had an exclusive report in May about the renovation plan, they said the project has a planned completion date of 2034.
But, as Inside Flyer reports, delays or budget concerns could delay the project's completion.
