Tennis star Taylor Townsend won't continue in the Guadalajara Open after needing emergency surgery, she confirmed on social media on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
"Welp ... This (expletive) definitely wasn't on my bingo card," Townsend posted on her Instagram story. "Through (trials) and tribulations ... still I rise. I'll update y'all soon."
Hours later, the tournament posted a message from Townsend, revealing that she needed to withdraw from the competition. It's unclear what sort of procedure the 30-year-old requires.
Wednesday, Townsend shared a photo of herself to Instagram in a bed with a hospital gown on and what appeared to be an IV in one of her hands. The star did not share any words with the photo, but instead listed three emojis: a phoenix,
a heart and a sad, crying face.
On Monday, Sept. 14, Townsend defeated Tatjana Maria in three sets, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, before her withdrawal.
"Hi, everybody, on the heels of achieving my first career Grand Slam at the U.S. Open, I was so excited to play in front of all of you in Gudalajara. Because of emergency surgery, I am forced to withdraw from the GDL Open, and it breaks my heart," Townsend's message said. "But I'm looking forward to coming back here next year to see all of you, the greatest tennis fans. Viva Mexico!!!"
On Sept. 1, Townsend and Katerina Siniakova won the U.S. Open women’s doubles title, rallying to beat Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 in the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
It's unclear when Townsend will return to the court after her surgery. However, she appears to be in good spirits. Townsend posted a video to her Instagram story, joking that she might "blow away" after not eating for at least 36 hours.
"I'm well on my way to getting into a size 2T, and if I keep this up, they're gonna have to change my bed out for the baby bed, and I'mma need a bassinet because I'm just getting way too small," Townsend said
