From flash flooding to water spouts turned tornadoes, August's weather has been particularly out-of-the-ordinary. But why?

How much rain has fallen in NYC this August?
As of Aug. 24, 8.04 inches of rain has fallen at New York City's Central Park, according to the National Weather Service.
That's the most amount of August rain NYC has gotten since 2021, when 10.32 inches of rain fell in total that month.
The average for August is around 5 inches, the NWS says. The rainiest August since 2000 was in 2011, when 18.95 inches fell.
Why is so much rain falling in NYC?
A tropical airmass, low-pressure systems, summer heat and plenty of moisture in the atmosphere have seemingly led to the high rainfall amounts over the past month.

forecast for NYC as of Aug. 24 is:

- Tuesday, Aug. 25: Sunny to partly cloudy, high of 78 degrees low of 65 degrees
- Wednesday, Aug. 26: Sunny, high of 80 degrees low of 70 degrees
- Thursday, Aug. 27: Humid with a possible thunderstorm, high of 81 degrees low of 69 degrees
- Friday, Aug. 28: Humid with clouds, high of 82 degrees low of 68 degrees
- Saturday, Aug. 29: Partly sunny, high of 82 degrees low of 69 degrees
- Sunday, Aug. 30: Showers expected, high of 78 degrees low of 69 degrees
- Monday, Aug. 31: Showers expected, high of 79 degrees low of 68 degrees
What was the long-range forecast for New York, NY?
According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, precipitation was expected to be two inches (below average) for August 2026. That means that the prediction was six inches off so far.
The average temperature was expected to be 75 degrees.
