Toronto Tempo guard Marina Mabrey won't take the court again this WNBA season.
On Wednesday, the Tempo announced Mabrey will miss the remainder of the season with a right adductor injury. The team says she is expected to make a full recovery and won't require surgery.
Mabrey last played for Toronto on Aug. 18, scoring 22 points while adding three assists, one steal and one block in 29 minutes. On Aug. 19, the Tempo guard was listed on the team's injury report for a Washington Mystics matchup as "doubtful" with a right hamstring injury before being ruled out. A day later, on Aug. 20, Mabrey was listed as "out" with a right adductor injury.
Mabrey, who joined the Tempo in the offseason during the team's expansion draft, played 32 games. She averaged
a career-high 20.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and nearly one steal per game. The 30-year-old ranks sixth in the league in points per game and is tied for first in 3-pointers made per game (3.3) with Atlanta Dream guard Rhyne Howard. This season, Mabrey had six 30-point performances and tied the WNBA single-game scoring record (53 points) on June 25.
Mabrey's departure is just the latest in a line of injuries for the Tempo this season.
Guard Brittney Sykes (foot) and forward Aneesah Morrow (knee) are both out for the season. Rookie guard Kiki Rice has played 24 games after missing eight weeks with an ankle injury. Guard Julie Allemand (11 games) and forwards Isabelle Harrison (12 games) and Nyara Sabally (16 games) have all missed time with various injuries. Center Temi Fagbenle missed 10 games to open the season with a Grade 2 acromioclavicular (AC) joint sprain in her right shoulder before later missing seven more games with a concussion and an eye injury.
“We have learned a lot about ourselves, haven't we?" Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello said about Mabrey's injury and the team's remaining four regular-season games. "We faced a lot of players getting opportunities to put their best foot forward, but we still want to come out and compete hard."
For the most part, we've done that, and we've had a very limited roster the whole season long, but we can still fight with the players we have left ... We're not looking at wins; we're just looking at processes now, and as we continue to look forward to next year."
