With National Guard troops expected to remain in Washington DC until Inauguration Day 2029, Guardsmen will soon receive an upgraded living situation.
Troops have stayed in hotels across the region since their deployment began last August, and now they'll get their own apartments through a $292 million contract.
The contract with lodging company Placemakr will provide 2,000 apartment-style homes, which the National Guard says will provide a "long-term solution for deployed personnel."
Despite the hefty $292 million price tag, officials say it will cost half as much as hotels would have.
There were initially 800 troops deployed to DC, and that number has surged to 5,000 troops from nearly two dozen states.

Which apartments will the National Guard use in Washington DC?
Placemakr
has properties in 10 cities throughout the country, and their DC options have units that range from studios to 3-bedroom apartments.
Only one of the five — Coda on Half — in the DMV have apartments currently available, with the others only offer for hotel stays. Rent at Coda on Half starts at $2,103 for a 528-square-foot 1-bedroom apartment.

It's unclear when troops will move in to their apartments.
