St. Louis City goalkeeper Roman Bürki was taken off in a stretcher after suffering a head injury in the U.S. Open Cup final against the Columbus Crew on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
Bürki was involved in a frightening incident midway through the second half, as Crew winger Anass Zaroury inadvertently kneed the goalkeeper in the head as both chased a loose ball in the box.
The veteran goalkeeper was down motionless for several minutes as he received treatment on the pitch. Eventually he was loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled off the field.
Bürki did manage to wave and give a thumbs up to the crowd as he was stretchered off. He was replaced by Ben Lundt in the 78th minute of a scoreless game.
CBS Sports reporter Hailey Sutton said on the broadcast that Bürki
was being transported to the hospital, and was conscious and had all movement in his extremities.
Bürki, 35, signed with St. Louis prior to its expansion season in 2023. The former Swiss international spent seven seasons with Borussia Dortmund prior to joining St. Louis.
