DeWanna Bonner will sign with the Atlanta Dream for the remainder of the regular season and WNBA playoffs, a person with knowledge of the signing confirmed to USA TODAY Sports Wednesday.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the signing was not yet official.
This comes after the 17-year WNBA veteran reached a buyout agreement with the Phoenix Mercury on Monday, Aug. 24. Bonner and Mercury general manager Nick U’Ren said in statements the move gave Bonner, 39, the chance to pursue a WNBA title in what could be her final postseason.
Bonner had to clear waivers before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
The Mercury were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention on Saturday, Aug. 22, when they lost 99-89 at home to the Dream
despite trading for All-Star guard Kelsey Plum in an attempt to save the season.
Bonner was averaging 10.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. A six-time All-Star and two-time All-WNBA selection, she ranks second all-time in WNBA games played, trailing Hall of Famer Sue Bird by eight.
Bonner holds career averages of 14.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 41.4% from the floor, 30.2% from 3-point land and 85.7% from the free throw line.
