Even on weekends that Formula 1 doesn't have a race, Lewis Hamilton stays on the go.
The seven-time champion was a co-chair for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opening gala on Saturday, Sept. 19. in Los Angeles. He wore a black suit with wide satin lapels and opted to go without a shirt to let his single-strand necklace shine.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the other co-chairs of the evening were Julie Bell, Tom Cruise, Guillermo del Toro, Greta Gerwig, Jensen Huang, JR, Steven Spielberg and Pharrell Williams. Hamilton mingled with celebrities like Ron Howard, Bryce Dallas Howard, Tyler Perry, Tracy Ellis Ross, Spike Lee, Rick Caruso and Jerry Bruckheimer. He also met up with Kim Kardashian, who he is dating.
Hamilton is good friends with
the co-founder of the museum, entrepreneur Mellody Hobson, and the two share a mission to bring diversity to various industries. Hobson is married to George Lucas, who she founded the museum with and is the namesake for the venue. TheF1 icon became a part owner of the NFL's Denver Broncos after her invitation to join the ownership group.
Hamilton posted about the event on Instagram with a gallery of photos, including one of him with Kardashian and one of himself posing in front of a figure of Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu in the "Star Wars" saga.
"Taking a moment to celebrate my dear friends @mellodyhobson, George Lucas, and the incredible work they continue to do," Hamilton wrote in the caption. "Over the past 8 years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing first hand the hard work they’ve put into the @lucasmuseum.
"Access really matters, they’ve created a space that invites people to be curious, to dream big and see how valuable their own stories are. Together they bring purpose, intelligence and intention, combined that with a creative legacy that is unmatched. Their generosity knows no bounds, and I am so honoured to have co-chaired the museum’s opening. Thank you for an incredible night, well done."
Queen Latifah reportedly gave opening remarks at the soirée and compared the Lucas Museum to the Louvre in Paris and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Hobson and Lucas also addressed the crowd before the guests explored the 10,000 square feet museum, which commemorates Lucas' own work and features pieces from a wide range of artists, including Frida Kahlo, Norman Rockwell and Charles White. The space was designed by Ma Yansong and sits in the same vicinity of USC's campus and BMO Stadium.
“If your husband or spouse comes home and says they want to build a museum, I suggest your response is a hard no,” Hobson laughed after reflecting on the 17-year journey to make the project a reality. “I used to joke with George that at home, one of my jobs as his wife was to serve as a pair of gravity boots; I’d say, ‘George, stay with us,’ as I tried to hold him down. But this time, he pulled me up with him.”
Hamilton is in his second year with Ferrari and sits third in the F1 standings behind George Russell and the series leader, Kimi Antonelli. He got his first win with the Scuderia in June at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.
The Lucas Museum opens to the public on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
