Uber is set to lay off more than 100 employees in Santa Clara County, according to filings tracked by the state. It comes as the rideshare service announced earlier in September that it’d be slashing the size of its team by 10% to streamline its operations.
The layoffs affect 137 employees at two addresses in Sunnyvale, according to advanced layoff notices processed on Sept. 14.
Uber did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the layoffs.
The pending layoff notices are dated Sept. 2, the same day Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced the 10% reduction in staff — or about 3,300 employees, Reuters reported — in a message shared to employees.
Khosrowshahi said that
while Uber has “become a much larger and stronger company” in recent years, the company’s growth “has also brought complexity,” such as “more fragmented ownership” and instances of “structures” that no longer serve Uber.
According to Khosrowshahi, Uber has made staffing reductions that result in a “simpler org chart geared toward building versus managing.” Uber has also brought teams together “where fragmentation was creating duplication and slowing decisions.”
“A leaner organization will mean clearer ownership, faster decisions, and more time spent building rather than coordinating,” Khosrowshahi said. “It will also generate savings that we intend to reinvest in growth, innovation, and the capabilities that will matter most over the coming years.”
The layoffs go into effect Nov. 2.
