Police in northern New Jersey the morning of Oct. 27 were searching for a suspect responsible for a mass shooting that took place during a candlelight vigil and left one person dead and four others hospitalized.
The shooting took place the night prior in Elizabeth, a city in Union County about 15 miles southwest of New York City.
Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage said that just after 9:30 p.m. ET, the city's police department received a report of shots fired in a neighborhood where a candlelight vigil was taking place.
Arriving officers found five people suffering from gunshot wounds, Bollwage said, and one victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Union County Prosecutor's Office Public Information Officer Lauren Farinas told USA TODAY the other
four victims were being treated for their injuries at a hospital on Tuesday and, at that same time, no arrest had been made in the case.
Officials did not say what the vigil was for but CBS News reported it was held in remembrance of a man who was fatally shot in the neighborhood about seven years ago.
A motive in the shooting was not immediately known and the case remains under investigation.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective William Hannon at 908-578-8482, Sergeant Nicholas Veltre at 908-347-7330, or Elizabeth Police Department Detective Daniel Mooney at 908-558-2036
