Some travelers on the East Coast are facing delays and cancellations due to a Federal Aviation Administration equipment outage.
According to the National Airspace System Status, the FAA issued a ground stop or ground delay on Sept. 21 for several of the Northeast's biggest hubs due to an equipment outage, including Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Teterboro Airport.
The FAA did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment, but a spokesperson for the agency told CBS News, "The FAA is pausing flights into Philadelphia International, Teterboro and Newark Liberty International airports due to issues with some frequencies at Philadelphia TRACON."
TRACON, or Terminal Radar Approach Control, are the facilities where the air traffic controllers guide approaching and departing airports.
The most impacted airports are Newark, where 21% of scheduled flights were canceled and 20% were delayed, and Philadelphia, where 6% were canceled and 36% were delayed, according to FlightAware at 2 p.m. ET.
United Airlines is seeing the most disruptions, with 161 flights canceled, or 6% of their schedule, and 343 delayed, or 10%.
"An FAA technology outage is affecting all airlines in the Northeast, including United’s operation at Newark Liberty," United said in a statement to USA TODAY. "Flights that had been destined for Newark have either been held at their departure airport or diverted to alternative airports. Once the FAA outage is resolved, we will work to safely get our customers to their destinations, and have issued a travel waiver to give our customers flexibility to manage their travel plans."
