A blocked field goal to upset a Super 25 team. One receiver fooling everyone, including the cameraman on a long run. A blown coverage suddenly turning into a forced fumble to preserve a shutout.
What these plays have in common is that they turned out to be three of the five best high school football plays we saw from the ninth full week of action from around the country.
This week's USA TODAY Sports Plays of the Week highlight package featured plays from across the country that will likely not be forgotten anytime soon by those who witnessed them in person.
Here are the five plays you can vote on as the best of the week:
Bay City Western LB Aiden Adcock: Fooling everyone (including his teammates)
As excited as Bay City Western (MI) may have
been after a blocked kick that left them down by five instead of eight, one Warriors player had the presence of mind to make the play even bigger. As the Warriors celebrated and Traverse City West (MI) players left the field dejected, Bay City linebacker Aiden Adcock scooped up the ball and returned it all the way for a touchdown that put the Warriors up late in the fourth quarter. Traverse City West would go on to win a 27-26 nail-biter.
Buford FS Ethan Hauser: Securing the shutout after blown play
Buford was in no distress in Friday night's 43-0 win over Collins Hill (GA). However, the shutout almost didn't happen without a heads-up play from senior safety Ethan Hauser. After Collins Hill completed a deep shot on a busted coverage, Hauser ripped the ball out of Collins Hill's receiver's arms before he could cross the goal line, and the Wolves recovered, keeping the shutout intact.
North Cobb WR Jordan Peacock: Fooling everyone including the cameraman
Confused is the only way to describe Jordan Peacock's long touchdown run against Walton Friday night. The broadcast crew, camera operator, and nearly every Walton (GA) player fell for the fake that let Peacock break loose for an 83-yard touchdown. Walton clawed its way back to a 35-28 win.
Prattville DL Elijah Brown: Blocked kick for the upset win
Thompson (AL) looked well on its way to a come-from-behind win. Then Elijah Brown happened. As the Warriors lined up to kick a go-ahead 21-yard field goal in the final 40 seconds, Brown broke through to block it, keeping the Lions unbeaten and ending Thompson's 12-game winning streak.
Thompson RB CJ Cowley: Getting shifty with late TD run
They may not have won, but the Warriors may have had one of the most exciting plays of the night, thanks to their senior running back. Cowley took the handoff from the Prattville 20, broke a tackle, weaved through defenders, broke another tackle, and somehow made it into the end zone on a play that looked more like something out of a video game than real life.
