Out in Hawaii, one high school football referee had more reception yards than some of the players on Friday night.
The game between Castle (Kaneohe, HI) and Pearl City (HI) gave viewers a moment they've likely never seen before. A first-quarter pass from Castle quarterback Noa Sebay, who spun out of pressure and was fleeing the defensive lineman, threw a pass that was a little high. It bounced off the fingertips of the leaping receiver and went directly toward the official.
They're calling it the refception, as the surprised referee, trying to get out of the way, ended up coming down with an unlikely catch. A defender caught in the moment began to tackle him before holding him up.
It was an unfortunate moment for Pearl City, who had a defender
in the area that may have actually been able to intercept the ball had the official not been there. It all worked out for the Chargers in the end, though, as they won 31-14 and picked up their third victory of the young season. Castle fell to 0-3.
And as for the referee? It's likely his first catch in a high school football game in many, many years.
