Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a kidnapping suspect moments after he shot the captive victim, who was locked in the trunk of the suspect's car in San Bernardino County on Wednesday night, authorities said.
The violence unfolded shortly after 10:15 p.m. July 29, when a witness reported hearing gunshots and a person screaming in the 2100 block of Monteverde Drive in Chino Hills, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
Responding deputies spotted a car speeding away from the area and tried to pull it over, officials said. The driver led them on a short pursuit before coming to a stop in a residential neighborhood along Wandering Ridge Drive, just over a mile away.
A passenger surrendered when deputies ordered the occupants
of the car to get out, according to a sheriff's department statement.
"The driver exited the car, approached the open trunk and shot a firearm into the trunk," the statement. "A deputy-involved shooting occurred, and the suspect was struck."
Officials discovered a man in the trunk had been shot by the suspect. Both men died from their wounds at the scene. Neither was identified by authorities on Thursday.
"Through investigation, it was determined the victim had been shot and kidnapped at the Monteverde address prior to the pursuit," the sheriff's department statement said.
The passenger, whose identity was not available, was taken into custody.
No deputies were hurt.
