Rolando “Rolly” Romero got unwanted attention early this month from Claressa Shields.
She claimed she could beat Romero.
Now he can set aside the silliness and finally get back into the ring.
Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) will put his WBA welterweight title on the line when he fights Teofimo Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) Saturday, Aug. 22. It’ll be Romero’s first fight since he knocked down Ryan Garcia and won the bout by unanimous decision when they fought at Times Square in New York in May 2025.
With all due respect, Romero will be facing a tougher opponent than Shields. Lopez is coming off a loss to Shakur Stevenson by unanimous decision, but he defended the WBO world super lightweight title three times before losing it to Stevenson.
Ring rust could be a factor
in this fight. Romero is returning to action after a 15-month layoff while Lopez is coming back after a layoff of less than seven months.
