Polls are open in Virginia, but there are a few things eligible voters must know before they visit their polling place.
Virginia has specific rules about voter identification and what people can bring inside polling places.
Here's a look at what voters should know before casting their ballots.
What do Virginia voters need to bring to their polling place?
Virginia voters should bring an acceptable form of identification when they visit their polling place.
Voters do not need to bring proof of their voter registration, but they must either show an acceptable ID or sign an ID confirmation statement before casting a regular ballot.
Do I need to bring an ID to vote in Virginia?
Yes, Virginia requires voters to provide an acceptable form of identification when voting in person, although the
ID does not have to include a photograph.
Acceptable forms of ID include: Virginia driver's license (even an expired license), valid U.S. passport or passport card, valid military identification, valid student identification issued by a Virginia high school or university, Virginia voter identification card, government-issued identification documents or a utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other qualifying government document containing the voter's name and address.
What can I bring to my Virginia polling place?
You can bring children under 15 with you to vote as long as they do not disrupt or interfere with normal voting procedures.
Virginia law allows voters to take sample ballots into the voting booth, but they cannot give, show or display the sample ballot to another person inside the polling place or within the restricted area outside it, except to an authorized assistant.
Voters are also allowed to wear campaign-related clothing and accessories displaying a candidate's name or political message.
What can't I bring to my Virginia polling place?
Virginia law prohibits knowingly carrying a firearm within 100 feet of a building, or part of a building, being used as a polling place. Certain exceptions apply, including for qualified law enforcement officers and licensed armed security officers performing their duties.
Voters may bring electronic devices, including cellphones, into Virginia polling places, but election officers can limit their use if they disrupt voting, cause delays or interfere with another person's ability to cast a ballot.
