Former Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene says that the Trump Administration is considering possible nuclear actions during strategy meetings on the Iran conflict.
Greene resigned from her position in the U.S House of Representatives in January before finishing a full term, following a tumultuous and public falling out with President Trump.
Despite her seat being filled with MAGA supporter Clay Fuller in a special election in May, Greene has stayed vocal on political issues, including criticizing the president and his administration repeatedly over the course of the last eight months.
Greene has been a strong opponent of the Iran war, joining forces with other conservatives like lame duck Rep. Thomas Massie and Tucker Carlson.
"The number
one Goal is, and always will be, that Iran cannot have, in any way, shape, or form, a Nuclear Weapon. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social Monday morning.
'I'm not speculating, I know,' Greene says
In a post on X Sunday, Greene said the Trump Administration was "discussing using nuclear weapons on Iran" during recent strategy meetings.
"Yes you read that correctly. It's real. I'm not speculating, I know," Greene said. "And it's pure evil."
USA TODAY reached out to the White House about Greene's comments and did not receive a response as of 10 a.m. Monday.
Greene claims the Trump Administration was told by internal intelligence that "Iran was nowhere near creating a nuclear weapon," but Israeli officials assured the president Iran was "weeks away" from the development.
"So we bombed anyways, killed their leaders and innocent little children in a school, and Iran has controlled the Strait of Hormuz ever since and punished the region for their part in it. And now our government is the one actually discussing lowering the nuclear threshold in order to use nuclear weapons against Iran even though Trump claims he's won the war like 40 times and says the U.S. controls the (strait)," Greene wrote.
Greene said if Trump were to use nuclear weapons it would bring a "nuclear holocaust," driving the entire world into "conflict, economic depression and mass human suffering."
The former congresswoman called on the administration to end the war and threatened that "ALL those in leadership right now" will be held "fully responsible for the rest of human history."
Greene among conservatives denouncing war in Iran
Greene may have only recently left the Republican Party, but Greene was one of the first previous MAGA allies to publicly denounce operations in Iran shortly after the first strikes at the end of February.
On Feb. 28, Greene wrote on social media her "generation has been let down" by false promises of an "America First" message from the White House, a message she also campaigned on. Fuller, who replaced Greene, also made "America First" ideology central to his campaign.
"We said 'No More Foreign Wars, No More Regime Change!' We said it on rally stage after rally stage, speech after speech," Greene wrote. "We thought the victory won in 2024 would be finally time to put America First. And we thought that meant the common American man and woman and their children. Not the elites. America has suffered and they don't even care."
Republicans in Congress have also started to distance themselves from Trump as the conflict in Iran continues.
Retiring Sen. Thom Tillis said his fellow lawmakers need to "separate from the White House" on the war ahead of the November midterms.
John Kennedy (R-LA) told reporters Trump isn't "always disciplined in his messaging" on the war, and many Americans are confused by the administration's rationale.
An internal memo circulated at the Senate Republican Conference in July, obtained by USA TODAY, told GOP senators to talk about concern for gas prices and focus on a message prioritizing bringing down prices.
In a previous statement to USA TODAY, White House spokesperson Kush Desai said, “While the President ensures that Iran will never possess a nuclear weapon for our national security, the President has been equally focused on unleashing prosperity for working-class Americans, from creating Trump Accounts to slashing job-killing regulations and taxes."
