Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis had a “medical emergency” at the university athletic facility Oct. 28 and had to be taken to the hospital but is now recovering, his father said on social media Thursday.
“He is recovering and thankful to his medical team, teammates and Colorado fans for their prayers and support,” said his father T. Carlton Lewis. “Please respect Julian and the Lewis family’s privacy. We will have no further comment at this time.”
Lewis, 19, also was listed as “doubtful” on the Big 12 player availability report Oct. 28, meaning he was doubtful to play in his team’s game Saturday at home against Kansas State. He hasn’t played in a game for Colorado since Oct. 26, when he was benched at halftime of a 23-13 loss at Baylor.
Colorado
coach Deion Sanders was asked about Lewis on Tuesday, before the medical emergency, and gave a series of cryptic remarks about Lewis’s status on the team. He began the year as the team’s quarterback of the future, a former five-star recruit who switched his commitment to play for Southern California to play for Sanders instead.
But after some early struggles, Sanders benched him in favor of Utah transfer Isaac Wilson. The Buffaloes (2-5) have lost five games in a row and now likely will face Kansas State with only two quarterbacks: Wilson and freshman Kaneal Sweetwyne.
Lewis is 2-4 as a starting quarterback at Colorado dating to last season and has been relegated to third-string in recent weeks. Wilson is 0-3 as a starer. Sweetwyne hasn’t started a game yet for the Buffs.
Earlier this year, another Colorado quarterback, Dominiq Ponder, died in a car accident in Boulder. The team wears a patch on its jersey honoring him: DP 7.
