First lady Melania Trump facilitated the reunion of a fifth group of Ukrainian and Russian children with their loved ones, "continuing her humanitarian work on behalf of those affected by the war," her office said on Thursday, July 30.
Five children were reunited with their families, marking a milestone "step toward ensuring that innocent kids can safely return to their homes, communities, and the people who care for them," the first lady's office said in a statement.
"While diplomacy and peacebuilding are important to this effort, they are surpassed by our collective ability to place children above international disputes," Melania Trump's statement reads. "Every reunion is a reminder that compassion, dignity, and family can transcend even the darkest
of times: war."
The first lady added that she and her representatives will "continue working with the governments of Russia and Ukraine to safely return children to their families and communities."
Melania Trump's letter to Putin
Melania Trump first raised the plight of children in a personal letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, which President Donald Trump hand delivered to Putin during their summit talks last August in Alaska. A ceasefire deal on Russia's invasion of Ukraine was not agreed upon during the event.
The first lady, in her letter, emphasized "it is time" to protect children and future generations around the globe, USA TODAY previously reported.
"We must strive to paint a dignity-filled world for all—so that every soul may wake to peace, and so that the future itself is perfectly guarded," the first lady wrote. "A simple yet profound concept, Mr. Putin, as I am sure you agree, is that each generation’s descendants begin their lives with a purity—an innocence which stands above geography, government, and ideology."
The letter, however, made no specific reference to Ukraine or the tens of thousands of Ukrainian children who have been removed from Ukraine and Russian-occupied territory to Russia without the consent of their families or legal guardians.
"In today's world, some children are forced to carry a quiet laughter, untouched by the darkness around them– a silent defiance against the forces that can potentially claim their future. Mr. Putin, you can singlehandedly restore their melodic laughter," the letter said.
First set of children returned to Ukraine in October 2025
Melania Trump's efforts first bore fruit in October 2025 when Putin's government agreed to return Ukrainian children who were taken to Russia as minors and have since turned 18.
The first lady had announced the news in a rare address from the White House, where she highlighted her personal efforts to reunite children with their families. Trump, in her address, said she aimed to facilitate regular reunifications of children with their families until every child is returned home. "As first lady, this is an important initiative for me," Trump said. "It is built on shared purpose and lasting impact."
Since October 2025, four more returns have taken place in December 2025, February, April and July 2026.
