National high school football power Thompson has cancelled its final home game of the season, the Alabama high school announced on social media Monday, Oct. 19.
The game, which was supposed to take place between the formerly-No. 10 Warriors and Choctawatchee High School on Oct. 29, was called off due to effects from Hurricane Isais on Choctawatchee.
"Our opponent, Choctawatchee High School, continues to experience lingering effects from Hurricane Isais, including ongoing schedule challenges resulting from the storm," read the statement. "Despite efforts to explore alternative arrangements, multiple circumstances have made it impossible to play the contest as originally scheduled as well as scheduling any new opponent or contest."
Choctawatchee's
location in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, put it in the path of the early-October hurricane that caused destruction across the southeastern United States. The area dealt with school closures, damage and disrupted athletic schedules as a result.
A post from the Choctawatchee Football Facebook account on Oct. 15, seemingly before the cancellation decision was made, said "completing our district schedule while prioritizing the safety of our student athletes must come first."
National power Thompson, which is currently 7-1 on the season, will play their next and now final regular season game Oct. 23 against Oak Mountain. The Warriors dropped out of the national Super 25 this week after a 28-27 loss to Prattville (AL).
