Hello Kitty meets Godzilla in a monster Happy Meal mash-up hitting the menu at McDonald's.
The new Hello Kitty & Friends x Godzilla Happy Meal, available at McDonald's starting Tuesday, Aug. 18, comes with one of eight toys blending Hello Kitty characters and monsters from the Godzilla movies.
McDonald's describes the new Happy Meal toys as "the ultimate crossover where Kawaii meets Kaiju, making friends at first bite and proving that even the mightiest monsters have a soft side," on its menu spotter website.
A kawaii creature exudes cuteness à la Hello Kitty, a character – it's a little girl, not a cat – created in 1974 by Japanese entertainment company Sanrio. "Kaiju" references giant monsters such as featured in Japanese films and TV, according
to the Oxford English Dictionary.
Godzilla first appeared in the 1954 Japanese filmi "Gojira," which was adapted for the 1956 Americanized film, "Godzilla, King of the Monsters."
What are the new Hello Kitty & Friends x Godzilla Happy Meal toys?
The new toys amount to "one of the best collections of Happy Meal toys I've ever seen," said Guillaume Huin, who leads global brand strategy for McDonald's, in a teaser video and image on X on Aug. 10.
McDonald's begins offering the new Hello Kitty & Friends x Godzilla Happy Meal on Tuesday, Aug. 18. Here are the eight toys, available for a limited time at participating restaurants nationwide:
