With less than a day until the Nov. 3 election, the U.S. Senate race in Michigan has made national news once again, after U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens flipped her endorsement of Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed to Republican Mike Rogers, a surprise announcement.
Stevens' endorsement of Rogers came several days after her fiancé, Jason Turkish, told The Detroit News that he was backing Rogers.
But who is Stevens' fiancé? Here's what to know.
Who is Jason Turkish?
Turkish, who lives in Huntington Woods, a suburb of Detroit, is a lawyer and Jewish Democrat. He is engaged to Stevens.
After completing his undergraduate degree in political science at the University of Michigan, Turkish attended Northwestern University’s law school in Chicago, where he graduated cum laude.
Additionally,
Turkish has donated over $50,000 to Democrats in the past several years, campaign finance records show.
He has also previously given to Republican candidates.
How did Turkish and Stevens meet?
Stevens and Turkish first met in 2022 and announced their engagement on Aug. 26, 2026, after their relationship blossomed during the primary.
The couple, who were vacationing in Italy at the time, said they planned to visit Israel shortly after to speak with survivors of the Oct. 7, 2023, attack.
Turkish’s father was born in Haifa, Israel, and his grandparents were refugees of the Holocaust.
Who does Turkish work for?
Turkish is the president and managing partner of Nyman Turkish PC, a disability and litigation firm with offices in California, Florida and Michigan.
Some of his most notable cases involved the removal of logic games for LSAT test-takers and securing blind Michigan voters equal access to absentee ballots, his company's website says.
Why does Turkish say he's not voting for El Sayed?
Turkish told The Detroit News he's become convinced El-Sayed is antisemitic, though the nominee has repeatedly denounced antisemitism.
