French Open champion Alexander Zverev and two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka are the No. 1 seeds in the singles draw at the US Open, the United States Tennis Association announced Thursday, Aug. 27.

The singles tournament in the year's last Grand Slam starts Sunday, Aug. 30, and runs through the women's final on Sept. 12 and the men's championship on Sept. 13.

The seeds are based on the current official ATP and WTA rankings, and players ranked behind injured players or those not playing in the tournament will move up the seeding list, which is why Zverev, ranked second in the world, is the top seed this year.

There are five Americans total in the top 10 seeds of both the men's and women's draws (Jessica Pegula (No. 3), Coco Gauff (No. 4),

Ben Shelton (No. 8), Taylor Fritz (No. 9) and Amanda Anisimova (No. 10).

Potential quarterfinals in the men's draw include Alexander Zverev (1) vs. Alex de Minaur (6), Felix Auger-Aliassime (3) vs. Flavio Cobolli (5), Daniil Medvedev (7) vs. Novak Djokovic (4), Ben Shelton (8) vs. Carlos Alcaraz (2).

The women's draw packs a punch for potential quarterfinals matchups with Aryna Sabalenka (1) vs Linda Nosková (6), Coco Gauff (4) vs. Mirra Andreeva (5), Jessica Pegula (3) vs. Karolína Muchová (7), Iga Świątek(8) vs. Elena Rybakina (2).

Alcaraz begins his title defense against Roman Safiullin, who is ranked No. 98 in the world, while Sabalenka's first-round opponent is Camila Osorio of Colombia.
