There's a real chance Florida State football's top two candidates to replace Mike Norvell are currently without coaching jobs.
Former LSU coach Brian Kelly
expressed his interest in the Florida State opening on Tuesday, Nov. 3, two days after the school fired Norvell. Kelly joins former Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher, who led the Seminoles to a national championship in 2013, as former college head coaches as potential candidates."When you’re talking to an unemployed football coach, every job’s a great job, you know? Kelly said on Sirius XM's "College Sports Radio. "But Florida State, look, I’ve got a great history with Florida State, great games.
I know what that’s like, the history and tradition of Florida State, playing in that state, and the fan base.
“So anytime you have an incredibly brand driven, great tradition and history, there’s a want and desire to be part of somebody that has had that success and, certainly, leading that program, from anyone’s perspective, would be an honor and privilege.”
Kelly told USA TODAY Sports in April he wants to be back in coaching. He has also been a rumored candidate for the Maryland opening after it fired Mick Locksley earlier this season.
Kelly has won everywhere in his career, even leading LSU to an SEC championship game berth in his first season with the Tigers before stalling out last season. Kelly, the winningest coach in Notre Dame history, has a 297-109-2 all-time record with multiple coach of the year awards and two Division II titles dating back to his stint at Grand Valley State.
He reflected on what went wrong at LSU in his interview with USA TODAY Sports before the season.
“This past transition for me gave me some time to think about the things I would have done differently or better," he said. "We were in a real new change in college football, where building a front office was crucial. Making sure that your hires were the right hires.
"I think most of the hindsight for me, would be based upon not the culture or process of building a championship program but probably the hiring process. And, making sure that you have the pieces in place to handle where college football is today."
It's clear Kelly wants back in the game. Where, and which team might want to hire him, are the only questions.
