What's Happening?
On August 21, 2025, stakeholders gathered in Abuja for a regional workshop aimed at tackling climate change impacts on agriculture in West and Central Africa. The event focused on revitalizing the Community of Practice (CoP) on foresight analysis, a strategic approach to anticipate and mitigate future challenges in the agricultural sector. Dr. Alcade Segnon from the Alliance Biodiversity and International Centre for Tropical Agriculture highlighted the increasing challenges posed by climate change to the region's agriculture and food systems. The workshop aimed to equip participants with skills to mainstream foresight analysis into research programs and policies, addressing both climatic and non-climatic drivers such as population growth and environmental degradation. Dr. Abubakar Dabban, Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria, emphasized the importance of strategic planning tools to proactively identify emerging trends and develop resilience strategies.
Why It's Important?
The workshop is crucial for enhancing the capacity of agricultural stakeholders in West and Central Africa to address climate-related challenges. By integrating foresight analysis into agricultural planning, the region can better anticipate and respond to future uncertainties, ensuring sustainable agricultural growth. This initiative supports strategic alignment with regional development priorities, fostering collaboration and innovation within the agricultural research community. The focus on foresight analysis also highlights the need for proactive measures to mitigate risks associated with climate change, which is vital for food security and economic stability in the region.
What's Next?
Stakeholders are expected to integrate the tools and methodologies discussed during the workshop into their operations, supporting strategic planning and anticipating future challenges. The Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria plans to continue fostering a collaborative culture within the foresight community to drive meaningful change. Additionally, CORAF aims to expand the community by adding new members and increasing training opportunities for Nigerians, enhancing the region's capacity to address climate risks.
