From Local Newsman to Political Contender
Chuck Hubbard is a native of Wilkes County, North Carolina, whose family history is intertwined with the local news landscape. He began working at the age of eight at the Wilkes Journal-Patriot, a local newspaper founded by his grandfather in 1932. This early start in the print shop led to a lifelong career in journalism. After graduating from Wofford College in 1985 with a bachelor's degree, he began reporting full-time. For over forty years, Hubbard was on the front lines of breaking news in the region, a role his campaign says instilled in him a commitment to facts and objectivity, qualities he promises to bring to Washington. This transition from journalism to politics represents a pivotal chapter in his life, moving from reporting on public
policy to seeking a direct role in shaping it.
The 2026 Congressional Campaign
Hubbard is the Democratic Party's candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in North Carolina's 5th Congressional District. He secured his place on the November 3, 2026, general election ballot after winning the Democratic primary on March 3, 2026. This is not his first foray into politics; he previously ran for the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2022 and the same U.S. House seat in 2024, though he was unsuccessful in those attempts. In the current race, he faces longtime Republican incumbent Virginia Foxx, among other candidates. The redrawn 5th District includes parts of several counties, including Guilford, Forsyth, and Watauga.
Core Platform and Key Issues
Hubbard's campaign platform is centered on a few key pillars aimed at supporting working families. He advocates for raising the minimum wage and shifting the tax burden more toward wealthy individuals and large corporations. A major focus is healthcare; he supports creating a government health insurance option to increase access and lower costs, particularly in rural areas. He has also vowed to protect social safety net programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security from cuts. On social issues, Hubbard supports a woman's right to choose, believing the issue should be a private matter between a patient and their doctor, and has stated that attacks on LGBTQ and minority communities are "outright un-American." His agenda also includes fighting political corruption by banning members of Congress from trading stocks and working to overturn the Citizens United Supreme Court decision.
Community Roots and Personal Life
Beyond his professional and political life, Hubbard has been an active member of his community. He has served on the boards of several local organizations, including the Wilkes Recovery Revolution, the Wilkes Child Abuse Prevention Team, and the Wilkes Prison Ministry, demonstrating a commitment to addressing local social challenges. An Eagle Scout in his youth, he maintains deep connections to his hometown of Wilkesboro, where he lives with his wife, Shari, a retired State Trooper. They have three daughters and two grandchildren. His campaign often highlights his identity as a lifelong resident of the district, positioning him as someone who understands the daily struggles and values of the people he seeks to represent.
