From Consumer Attorney to Community Advocate
Born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 14, 1954, and raised in a small Michigan town, Suzanne Bonamici moved to Oregon after high school and fell in love with the state. She worked her way through Lane Community College before earning a bachelor's degree and a law degree from the University of Oregon. It was during her time as a legal assistant at Lane County Legal Aid that she discovered a passion for consumer rights. This interest led her to a job in Washington, D.C., as a consumer protection attorney for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), where she focused on combating predatory and discriminatory lending practices. After moving back to Oregon with her husband, Michael, she entered private practice, representing individuals and small businesses.
When she took a break from her legal career to raise her two children, Bonamici became a deeply engaged community volunteer, particularly in public schools. This advocacy work, which included attending rallies at the state capitol, eventually sparked her decision to run for public office.
A Rapid Rise in Oregon Politics
Bonamici’s formal political career began in 2001 as a legislative assistant in the Oregon House of Representatives. By 2006, she successfully ran for a seat in the Oregon House herself. After just one term, her effectiveness led to an appointment and subsequent election to the Oregon State Senate in 2008. In the state legislature, she continued her focus on consumer protection and also took on roles related to education and workforce development. Her work included chairing the Senate Consumer Protection & Public Affairs Committee. This state-level experience built the foundation for her eventual run for national office. When Representative David Wu resigned in 2011, it created an opening in Oregon’s 1st congressional district. Bonamici won the special election in January 2012 and has held the seat ever since, consistently winning reelection by significant margins.
A Leading Voice on Education and the Workforce
In Congress, Bonamici has become a prominent leader on the Committee on Education and the Workforce. Strengthening public education was a primary reason she entered public service, and it remains a top priority. She was a key player in passing the bipartisan Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which replaced the No Child Left Behind law. Her contributions to ESSA included provisions to reduce high-stakes testing and give more decision-making power back to local districts. A passionate advocate for integrating arts into technical fields, she co-founded the bipartisan Congressional STEAM Caucus to promote adding arts and design to STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). She also champions policies to make college more affordable and supports robust funding for Pell Grants and measures to manage student loan debt. Recently, she introduced legislation to establish a federal framework for the use of artificial intelligence in education and workforce settings.
Championing Environmental and Consumer Protections
Beyond education, Bonamici is a senior member of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and a leader on its environmental subcommittees. As a representative for coastal Oregon, she co-chairs the House Oceans Caucus and the Congressional Estuary Caucus, focusing on issues affecting coastal communities and ocean health. Her work includes efforts to address climate change, ensure policy is based on independent science, and advance tsunami warning and research programs. Drawing on her early career, she has also continued to fight for consumer rights. In Congress, she has introduced legislation aimed at curbing predatory online payday lending and protecting consumers from deceptive debt collection practices. She also leads efforts to reauthorize and modernize the Elder Justice Act, which provides resources to prevent the abuse and financial exploitation of seniors.
