From Pittsburgh to Baghdad
Christopher Deluzio is a Western Pennsylvania native, born in Pittsburgh in 1984 and raised in the suburb of Thornburg. After graduating from Bishop Canevin High School, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy. Upon graduation in 2006, he was commissioned as a surface warfare officer in the Navy. His service included three deployments, most notably a tour in Iraq where he was attached to a U.S. Army Civil Affairs unit. This experience on the ground during the war would become a formative part of his public identity and political career. He served in the Navy from 2006 to 2012, achieving the rank of Lieutenant.
A Legal Career Focused on Democracy
After his military service, Deluzio pursued a legal education, graduating with high honors from Georgetown University Law Center in 2013. He
clerked for a federal judge before entering the private sector as a litigation associate. However, his career soon pivoted toward public interest law with a specific focus on election integrity. He joined the Brennan Center for Justice, where he worked on voting rights and election security. He later brought that expertise back to his hometown, serving as the policy director for the University of Pittsburgh's Institute for Cyber Law, Policy, and Security, also known as Pitt Cyber. During his time at Pitt, he was also involved in successfully organizing faculty with the United Steelworkers union.
The Path to Congress
Deluzio entered the political arena by running for the U.S. House in 2022 to represent Pennsylvania's 17th congressional district, an area that includes all of Beaver County and a swath of Pittsburgh's northwestern suburbs. He won the election to succeed Conor Lamb, defeating his Republican opponent with over 53% of the vote. Described as a progressive Democrat, Deluzio's campaign platform often highlighted his working-class roots, military service, and commitment to labor unions and voting rights. He was sworn into office on January 3, 2023, for the 118th Congress and won his re-election in 2024.
Key Issues and Legislative Record
In Congress, Deluzio's policy priorities reflect his pre-political career. He is a vocal supporter of organized labor and a member of the Labor Caucus. His core issues include protecting abortion access by codifying Roe v. Wade, expanding healthcare coverage through measures like Medicare-for-All, and passing stricter gun safety laws, such as a ban on assault weapons and expanded background checks. His experience as a veteran has also informed his work; upon taking office, he was appointed to both the House Armed Services and Veterans' Affairs committees. He has since also been appointed to the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Deluzio has proven to be a dedicated participant in legislative proceedings, achieving a perfect voting attendance record in 2025, one of only a handful of members to do so.
