From Military Service to Agri-Business
Born on Homestead Air Force Base in Florida, Eric "Rick" Crawford grew up in a military family, an experience that shaped his early career choices. Immediately after high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving for four years as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician and rising to the rank of sergeant. Following his military service, Crawford attended Arkansas State University, earning a degree in Agriculture Business and Economics. His post-military, pre-political career was diverse. He competed as a rodeo cowboy, worked as a freelance rodeo announcer, and eventually transitioned into media. He became a familiar face and voice in Arkansas as a news anchor and agriculture reporter before founding his own farm news network, AgWatch,
which served radio stations across five states.
The Path to Congress
Driven by a desire for public service, Crawford entered the political arena in 2010, running for the U.S. House seat in Arkansas's 1st Congressional District being vacated by retiring Democrat Marion Berry. Running as a Republican, Crawford capitalized on a national wave of conservative enthusiasm. His victory was historic; he became the first Republican to represent the district since the post-Civil War Reconstruction era. The district, which covers the eastern part of Arkansas including the Delta and parts of the Ozarks, is heavily agricultural and has become staunchly Republican, with a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+23. Crawford has successfully secured re-election in every cycle since, often running unopposed in the Republican primaries.
Policy Focus: Agriculture and National Security
In Washington, Crawford has built his career around two pillars that reflect both his personal background and his district's priorities: agriculture and national security. He has been a senior member of the House Agriculture Committee, where he played a key role in the passage of two major Farm Bills. He views a robust domestic food supply as a matter of national security, a perspective that guides his work on behalf of Arkansas's rice, cotton, and soybean farmers. His own website notes that his district produces more rice than any other in the country. Simultaneously, his military experience informs his work on defense and intelligence. He has served on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence since 2017 and was appointed its chairman in 2025. His voting record aligns with conservative positions on fiscal policy and social issues, and he has supported measures like the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.
Influence and Key Committee Roles
A congressman's influence is often measured by their committee assignments, and Crawford holds several key posts. He serves as Chairman of the powerful House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, giving him oversight of the nation's intelligence agencies. He is also a senior member of the House Agriculture Committee and holds the position of Vice Chairman on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Through his role on the Transportation committee, he has championed infrastructure projects for his district, including securing an interstate designation for I-555, a key corridor in northeast Arkansas. He is also the founder or co-founder of several congressional caucuses, including the EOD Caucus, which advocates for military bomb technicians, and the Congressional Rice Caucus, reflecting his district's economic backbone.
