A Decades-Long Military Career
Chris Shea’s career in public service began in 1991 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman. His path soon led him to one of the most elite units in the world after he completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training. Over a career spanning more than three decades, Shea served on multiple SEAL teams, including SEAL Team 8 and the Naval Special Warfare Development Group. His operational tours included deployments to high-stakes environments like Sarajevo and Afghanistan. In the 1990s, he was part of a team tasked with apprehending war criminals in the former Yugoslavia. Later, in the 2000s, he served with joint task forces focused on pursuing high-value targets from al-Qaeda and the Taliban. His service also took him to the Pentagon,
where he worked as a Requirements Officer for the Chief of Naval Operations, helping to ensure Naval Special Operations forces were properly funded and equipped.
From the Battlefield to the Firehouse
After retiring from the Navy as a Warrant Officer in January 2024, Shea did not step back from service. He returned to his community in Connecticut and resumed his role as a lieutenant with the North Haven Fire Department. But it was his experience transitioning out of the military that sparked a new mission. Recognizing the difficulties many veterans face when re-entering civilian life, he founded Hero to Hero, Inc. The non-profit organization is designed to create a pipeline for highly skilled service members, particularly from special operations, to find meaningful second careers as first responders in police, fire, and emergency medical services. The initiative, which Shea developed as a capstone project while completing his college degree, partners with the Department of Defense's SkillBridge program to offer training and apprenticeships.
The 2026 Congressional Campaign
In January 2026, Shea announced his entry into politics, declaring his candidacy for the Republican nomination in Connecticut's 5th Congressional District. Framing his run as "the next mission," Shea leveraged his background as a non-politician with a record of service. His campaign gained traction, culminating in a decisive victory in the Republican primary on August 11, 2026, where he secured over 80% of the vote. He is now on the ballot for the general election on November 3, 2026, challenging incumbent Democrat Jahana Hayes. The race positions Shea, the career military operator and first responder, against a seasoned political figure, offering voters a distinct choice between two very different profiles of public service.
What He Stands For
Shea's campaign platform is built on themes that reflect his background. According to his campaign website, a central focus is national security and border control, where he advocates for enforcing immigration laws and stopping the flow of fentanyl. As a first responder, he has stated he has seen the drug's impact firsthand. He also emphasizes the need for a strong military, arguing that peace is maintained through strength and readiness. On domestic policy, his platform includes cutting what he terms wasteful government spending, reducing regulations to help businesses, and supporting law enforcement. He presents himself not as a career politician but as a problem-solver grounded in a lifetime of service, aiming to bring what he calls "grit, common sense, and accountability" to Washington.
