From Educator to Elected Official
At her core, Missi Hesketh's career has been defined by public service, first in education and later in local government. Born in Elmhurst, Illinois, she has spent most of her professional life in Missouri, building a decades-long career as a teacher. Hesketh holds multiple degrees, including a bachelor's in elementary education and advanced degrees from Drury University and Missouri State University. This extensive background in the school system provided the foundation for her entry into politics, where she served as the mayor of Forsyth, Missouri. This transition from the classroom to the mayor's office marked the first major step in a political journey that has now led her to a congressional campaign.
The 2026 Congressional Campaign
Missi Hesketh is the Democratic Party's
candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Missouri's 7th Congressional District. After an unsuccessful bid for the same seat in 2024, she ran again and secured her spot on the ballot for the November 3, 2026, general election after advancing from the Democratic primary on August 4, 2026. Her campaign is centered on a platform that reflects her background, emphasizing issues such as affordability, public education, and healthcare access. She is running against Republican incumbent Eric Burlison in a district that covers a significant portion of southwest Missouri, including the cities of Springfield and Joplin.
A Platform Rooted in Community Service
Hesketh's political positions are deeply influenced by her experience as a teacher and local leader. She has publicly stated that one of her primary objectives is to oppose initiatives like 'Project 2025,' signaling a focus on protecting existing governmental structures and norms. Her campaign themes include bringing federal funding back to rural communities in her district, protecting a woman's access to reproductive healthcare, and getting "big money" out of politics. In interviews, Hesketh has framed her candidacy as an extension of her desire to serve her community, a tenacity she says was instilled by a tumultuous childhood as the daughter of a Vietnam veteran.
An Uphill Battle in Southwest Missouri
Running as a Democrat in Missouri's 7th Congressional District presents a significant challenge. The district is considered a Republican stronghold, making any Democratic campaign an uphill battle. Hesketh’s role as a challenger is to present a contrasting vision to that of the incumbent and persuade a broad swath of voters. Her professional history as an educator in the region, rather than a career politician, forms a key part of her appeal. She is betting that her deep local ties and focus on community-level issues can resonate with voters who may feel disconnected from national politics, even in a district that has consistently favored the other party.
