From Michigan Roots to California Education
Brian Burley's story begins not in the California districts he seeks to represent, but in a small town in Michigan. Raised in a blue-collar family, his father was a forklift operator and his mother worked as both a waitress and an accountant. In his official biography, Burley credits his upbringing with instilling the values of hard work and perseverance. A significant turning point came when his family moved to California for his mother to receive cancer treatment. After she passed away, Burley has said he was motivated to build a life of purpose and service in her honor. This path led him to the University of Southern California (USC), where he became heavily invested in his education. He earned an undergraduate degree in Political Economy
and followed it with three master's degrees from the same institution: one in Public Policy, another in Digital Media Management, and a third in Emergency Management.
A Career in Technology and Local Governance
Before becoming a fixture in Orange County politics, Burley built a career in information technology. His professional experience includes working as an IT analyst at USC and founding his own IT consulting and social media marketing company, Burley Technology LLC. This background in systems and technology informs his approach to problem-solving and public service. In 2024, Burley translated his community involvement into an elected position, winning a seat as a Trustee on the Huntington Beach City School District Board. In this role, he has championed what he describes as parental rights, fiscal responsibility, and academic excellence. His work on the school board serves as the primary example of his governance record as he campaigns for higher office, framing him as a leader grounded in local community issues.
The Political Platform of a California Republican
As a Republican candidate, Burley’s platform aligns with many core tenets of the modern conservative movement. A central theme of his campaign is delivering "practical, principled leadership" focused on community-level concerns. Key issues he highlights include enhancing public safety by supporting law enforcement, promoting economic opportunity, and securing the border with stricter immigration enforcement. Stemming from his work in education, he is a vocal advocate for parental rights in schools and has stated his support for policies that would give states and local communities more control over education, including the elimination of the federal Department of Education. On social issues, he has expressed his support for protecting religious liberty and restricting public funding for abortion providers. He casts himself as a leader who will prioritize solutions over partisan headlines in Washington.
A Persistent Path to Washington
Brian Burley is no stranger to the campaign trail. His current 2026 run for the U.S. House of Representatives in California's 42nd Congressional District is his latest in a series of attempts to win a seat in Congress. He previously ran in 2020 and 2022 for a seat representing a different district, and also briefly campaigned in the 2024 cycle before withdrawing. In the June 2, 2026 primary, Burley advanced alongside the incumbent, Robert Garcia, setting up their contest for the general election. This history of running demonstrates a long-term commitment to entering federal politics. His campaign finance records show he has consistently raised and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars over his various election cycles. This persistence has made him a familiar name among Orange County Republicans and a candidate determined to take his message from the school board to the national stage.
