Early Life and Path to Public Service
Born in New York City on September 25, 1953, Gregory Weldon Meeks was raised in a public housing project in East Harlem. His parents, who had moved from South Carolina during the Great Migration, instilled in him a strong sense of social justice. This foundation led him to Adelphi University, where he earned a history degree, and then to Howard University School of Law for his J.D. degree. Before entering politics, Meeks built a career in the legal field, serving as a Queens County Assistant District Attorney, a special narcotics prosecutor, and a supervising judge for the New York State Workers Compensation System. This series of roles provided him with a ground-level view of the justice system and community challenges.
