Dwayne Romero is a name that appears at the crossroads of Colorado business, public policy, and local governance. A West Point graduate and combat veteran, his career charts a unique path from military service to mountain-resort real estate.
From West Point to the Persian Gulf
Dwayne Romero’s professional life is anchored by a foundation of military discipline and service. At 18, he was recruited to play baseball at the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point. Upon graduating, he served for seven years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. His military career included a significant role as a Combat Engineer Executive Officer during the Persian Gulf War, where his leadership in combat earned him a Bronze Star for valor. This period of service also saw him graduate
from the U.S. Army Ranger School. After his military career, which included being stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, he and his wife Margaret chose to build their life in the state, where they have lived for over 35 years and raised three daughters.
A Major Force in Rocky Mountain Real Estate
After his military service, Romero transitioned into the world of business, earning an MBA from Harvard Business School before making his mark in real estate. He is the co-founder and CEO of The Romero Group, a real estate development, management, and investment firm based in Colorado's Roaring Fork Valley. The company manages dozens of homeowner associations and metropolitan districts, along with significant commercial assets. His firm employs over 100 people and holds major resort real estate, including the Snowmass Mall and parts of Lakota Canyon Ranch. This work has established him as a significant figure in the development and management of some of Colorado's most prominent mountain communities.
A Shift into Public Service
Alongside his business career, Romero has maintained a deep commitment to public service. This dedication led to a cabinet-level appointment in 2011 by then-Governor John Hickenlooper. Romero served as the Executive Director of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, where he was tasked with job creation and strengthening the state's economy. In this role, he spearheaded the "Colorado Blueprint," an economic development plan for recovery and growth. His public service record is extensive and hyperlocal, including two terms on the Aspen City Council, and serving on the boards of the Aspen Fire Protection District, the Roaring Fork Transit Authority, and the Aspen School District Board of Education.
Political Aspirations and Recent Endeavors
More recently, Romero has entered the political arena as a candidate. In 2026, he emerged as the Democratic candidate for Colorado's 3rd Congressional District after winning the primary. Touting his military background, business experience, and extensive local public service, his campaign has focused on issues like job creation, protecting public lands, and lowering costs for families. This move represents a culmination of his dual careers, blending his private-sector acumen with a long-standing record of civic engagement. He continues to serve on local boards, such as the Snowmass Village Water and Sanitation Board, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to community governance even while pursuing national office.
