From the Mahoning Valley to the Capitol
Before he was Congressman Rulli, he was simply Mike from Rulli Bros. Markets. A lifelong resident of the Mahoning Valley, Rulli's identity is deeply intertwined with his family's century-old grocery business, where he served as director of operations. This background as a community businessman is central to his political persona. He often talks about understanding the daily economic pressures families face from his time interacting with customers over the deli counter. Born in 1969, Rulli graduated from Poland Seminary High School and earned a communications degree from Emerson College in Boston. Interestingly, his early years included a stint interning for Democrat Joseph P. Kennedy II and playing in a grunge band. He identified as a Democrat himself
until switching parties in the late 1990s, a move he attributed to his experiences with local politics.
A Start in Local Public Service
Rulli's political career didn't start with a run for a high-profile office. Instead, it began with local school board politics. He served for eight years on the Leetonia School Board, eventually becoming its president. His tenure is often highlighted by his supporters for leading the district out of a significant financial crisis and into a period of academic improvement without raising taxes. This experience burnished his credentials as a fiscal conservative and a problem-solver, a theme he would carry into his later campaigns. His entry into public service was reportedly sparked by an effort to save a local church from closing, cementing his image as a community advocate.
The Rise to the Ohio State Senate
In 2018, Rulli made the leap to state-level politics, winning a seat in the Ohio State Senate for the 33rd district. He was re-elected in 2022. During his time in Columbus, he built a reputation as a pro-business Republican. His legislative efforts included a law to prevent municipalities from banning plastic bags, a move praised by retailers. He was also known for his immediate and visible response to the 2023 Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, which fell within his district. He co-chaired the Senate's Select Committee on Rail Safety, which was formed in the aftermath to address safety concerns. Notably, Rulli was also one of a dozen Republican senators who voted against the controversial House Bill 6, the legislation connected to a major bribery scandal in Ohio politics.
Winning a Seat in Congress
Michael Rulli ascended to the national stage in June 2024 when he won a special election for Ohio's 6th Congressional District. The seat was left vacant after its previous occupant, Republican Bill Johnson, resigned to become the president of Youngstown State University. Rulli defeated Democrat Michael Kripchak to secure the seat. While the district is reliably Republican, the race was closer than many analysts expected. Rulli ran on a platform focused on job growth, curbing inflation, and enhancing economic stability. His victory expanded the narrow Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was sworn into office on June 25, 2024. He now represents a large swath of eastern Ohio, including all of Mahoning, Columbiana, and Carroll counties.
